Operator Stress Index (OSI)
Measures how close Bitcoin miners are to their breakeven point across three electricity-price scenarios.
Purpose
While the MCR tells you about the overall mining climate, the OSI goes one level deeper by asking: "Given current revenue conditions, how stressed is a miner at a specific power cost?"
It converts implied operating margins into a 0–100 stress score across three representative electricity rates, giving you a fast read on which operators are thriving and which are under pressure.
Inputs Used
- BTC Price (PBTC) — Current USD price, sourced from CoinGecko.
- Network Difficulty (D) — Current difficulty, sourced from blockchain.info.
- Hardware Efficiency — Default 25 W/TH, representative of modern ASICs (e.g. Antminer S19 XP, S21).
- Block Subsidy — Currently 3.125 BTC per block (post-2024 halving).
- Power Price Scenarios — Three fixed rates that bracket the global range:
- $0.03/kWh — Industrial / stranded energy (lowest-cost miners)
- $0.06/kWh — Mid-range hosted / co-located miners
- $0.09/kWh — Retail / higher-cost jurisdictions
All market data refreshed every 6 hours.
Formula
Step 1 — Revenue per TH/day:
This derives how much USD one terahash of mining power earns per day from block rewards, based on current price and difficulty.
Step 2 — Power cost per TH/day:
Step 3 — Implied margin:
Step 4 — Stress score:
When margins are healthy (e.g. 60%), stress is low (40). When margins go negative, stress clamps to 100.
Interpretation Bands
0–39 · Low Stress
Healthy margins. Operations are comfortable and cash-flow positive even with some overhead.
40–69 · Moderate Stress
Margins are thinning. Operators should watch costs closely and consider efficiency upgrades.
70–100 · High Stress
Near or below breakeven. Revenue barely covers (or doesn't cover) electricity. Operators at this power cost may need to curtail or shut off machines.
What This Is / What This Is Not
✓ What OSI is
- A stress-test of mining economics at different power costs
- Useful for comparing your electricity rate against industry benchmarks
- Built on transparent, verifiable on-chain data
- Updated every 6 hours automatically
✗ What OSI is not
- A complete P&L — it excludes hosting fees, cooling, labor, depreciation
- Personalized to your exact ASIC model or firmware
- A prediction of future margins or network hashrate
- Investment or financial advice of any kind
Data Update Cadence
OSI is recomputed every 6 hours (4× daily) for all three power-price scenarios simultaneously. Each snapshot is stored in our timeseries database, enabling trend analysis over 7, 30, 90 days or the full available history.
Disclaimer: The Operator Stress Index is an informational signal only. It does not constitute financial, investment, or operational advice. Actual mining profitability depends on many factors not captured by this index — including your specific hardware model, firmware, hosting fees, cooling costs, and local regulations.
