Difficulty Change Gauges
Four gauges above the difficulty adjustment chart summarise the percentage change in Bitcoin network difficulty over 1, 7, 30, and 90 day windows.
← Back to Difficulty chartFormula
For each window N ∈ {1, 7, 30, 90} days:
change_N = (difficulty_now − difficulty_N_days_ago) / difficulty_N_days_ago × 100We pick the most recent difficulty sample ≤ (now − N days) from the same series that powers the difficulty adjustment chart. Because Bitcoin re-targets every 2016 blocks (~2 weeks), the 1D and 7D gauges are often 0% mid-epoch — that is expected, not a bug.
Interpretation Ranges
> +5% · Ramping — Significant hashrate influx; margins compressing.
0% to +5% · Rising — Network growing at trend pace.
Around 0% · Flat — Mid-epoch or a stable retarget.
-5% to 0% · Falling — Miners powering down; incumbents gain share.
< -5% · Capitulation — Large miner exit — often a historically favourable entry window.
Notes
Data source: the same mempool.space difficulty history feed used by the main difficulty adjustment chart.
The 90D gauge is the most robust signal — it always spans multiple retargets. Use 1D / 7D primarily to time entry near a fresh adjustment.
