Mining Climate Rating (MCR)

A single-number snapshot of how favorable current conditions are for Bitcoin miners.

Purpose

The Mining Climate Rating condenses the two most important on-chain variables — BTC price and network difficulty — into a 0–100 score that tells you at a glance whether it's a good time to be mining Bitcoin.

Think of it like a weather forecast for miners: a high score means sunny skies (strong revenue per terahash), while a low score means stormy conditions (revenue is compressed).

Inputs Used

  • BTC Price (PBTC) — The current USD price of Bitcoin, sourced from CoinGecko.
  • Network Difficulty (D) — The current mining difficulty, sourced from blockchain.info. Difficulty adjusts roughly every two weeks and determines how much hashing power is required to mine a block.

Both values are refreshed every 6 hours.

Formula

We first compute a revenue ratio R:

R = PBTC / (D / 1012)

R captures how much revenue one terahash of mining power earns relative to the difficulty it faces. When price rises or difficulty drops, R goes up.

The base MCR score is then:

MCRbase = clamp( round( √(R / 1000) × 75 ), 0, 100 )

The square root compresses extreme values so the score stays in a readable range. The result is clamped to 0–100.

Interpretation Bands

70–100 · Favorable

Strong revenue environment. Mining is broadly profitable across most hardware and electricity scenarios.

40–69 · Moderate

Viable for efficient operators but margins are thinner. Electricity cost matters more.

0–39 · Challenging

Revenue is well below normal. Marginal miners are likely unprofitable and may begin shutting off.

What This Is / What This Is Not

✓ What MCR is

  • A quick health-check of mining conditions
  • Based on verifiable on-chain data
  • Useful for comparing today vs. historical norms
  • Updated every 6 hours automatically

✗ What MCR is not

  • A prediction of future BTC price or difficulty
  • A substitute for a full financial model
  • Personalized to your electricity cost or hardware
  • Investment or financial advice of any kind

Data Update Cadence

MCR is recomputed every 6 hours (4× daily). Each snapshot is stored in our timeseries database, allowing you to view historical trends over 7, 30, 90 days or the full available history.
