Entry Barometer Methodology
A 0-100 composite that answers one question: is now a good time to buy an ASIC and start mining?Higher scores indicate more attractive entry conditions.

70-100 · Attractive Entry — Hashprice, payback, and margin all favourable; difficulty pressure low.
40-69 · Balanced — Mixed signals. Entry viable for operators with cheap power or long horizon.
0-39 · Costly Entry — Payback too long, margins compressed, or difficulty ramping. Wait or improve inputs.
Inputs & Sub-Scores
1. Hashprice score
Revenue per TH/day derived from live BTC price and network difficulty (subsidy-only). Scaled so $0.10/TH/day → 100 and $0.02/TH/day → 0.
hashprice = (1e12 / (D · 2^32)) · 86400 · 3.125 · P_BTC2. Payback score
Implied months to recoup ASIC capex, assuming a mid-tier $20/TH hardware cost. 6mo → 100, 18mo → 50, 36mo → 0.
payback_months = 20 / (hashprice · 30)3. Difficulty momentum score
Trailing 6-week difficulty change from mining_climate_index.difficulty_momentum. Flat or falling difficulty favours entry. -10% → 100, 0% → 60, +10% → 0.
4. Operator margin score
Inverse of OSI mid ($0.06/kWh scenario). Low operator stress → high entry score. 100 − OSI_mid.
5. BTC price regime score
Uses the MCR R-value R = P_BTC / (D/1e12) as an MVRV-style proxy. Low R (cheap BTC relative to difficulty) favours entry. R=500 → 100, R=1000 → 50, R=2000 → 0.
Blending
Equal-weighted mean of the five sub-scores, rounded to an integer.
score = round((hashprice + payback + momentum + margin + price) / 5)Caveats
The Entry Barometer assumes a $20/TH ASIC cost and subsidy-only revenue. Fee income is excluded because it is highly variable; including it would inflate the score during fee spikes. Adjust the payback interpretation to your own hardware and power price.
MVRV is proxied by R because on-chain MVRV is not part of this project's data pipeline. R correlates directionally with entry attractiveness (low R = under-mined BTC = better entry) but is not identical to MVRV.
The score refreshes when the MCR/OSI pipeline refreshes (every 6 hours).
