Bitcoin Fear & Greed Index
A 0-100 sentiment gauge for the crypto market, updated daily. 0 = Extreme Fear (potential buying opportunity). 100 = Extreme Greed (market may be due for a correction).
How to read it
0-24 · Extreme Fear — Fear tends to drive prices lower than fundamentals justify. Historically these zones have preceded strong recoveries.
25-44 · Fear — Cautious market. Miners often see improving entry economics here.
45-54 · Neutral — Balanced sentiment. No strong contrarian signal.
55-74 · Greed — Momentum-driven buying. Late-cycle behaviour begins here.
75-100 · Extreme Greed — Euphoria. Historically a signal to trim risk, not add to it.
What goes into the score
The index (calculated by alternative.me) blends five inputs:
- Volatility (25%) — Current BTC volatility vs 30/90-day averages. High volatility = fear.
- Market momentum / volume (25%) — Current buying volume vs 30/90-day averages. High volume + rising price = greed.
- Social media (15%) — Twitter posting rate and engagement on Bitcoin hashtags.
- Dominance (10%) — BTC's share of total crypto market cap. Rising dominance = fear (flight to quality).
- Trends (10%) — Google Trends data for Bitcoin-related search queries.
Historically, the surveys component (15%) has been paused; the remaining factors are re-weighted to 100%.
