About the Fleet ROI Calculator
The Fleet ROI / Capital Budgeting Calculator models the full financial lifecycle of a Bitcoin mining fleet investment. Unlike simple profitability calculators that show daily earnings, this tool evaluates whether a capital expenditure on mining hardware generates adequate returns over its useful life, accounting for difficulty growth and the time value of money.
Key Metrics
- NPV (Net Present Value): Total value of future cash flows discounted to today. Positive = good investment.
- IRR (Internal Rate of Return): Annualized return rate. Compare to your cost of capital.
- Payback Period: Months until cumulative cash flow turns positive.
- Depreciation Schedule: Tax-relevant asset value reduction over time.
- Financing (optional): A hardware loan with an interest-only period, monthly payment, DSCR and the return on your own equity, before or after income tax.
When to Use
- Evaluating new hardware purchases or fleet expansions
- Comparing different ASIC models on a lifecycle basis
- Presenting investment cases to stakeholders or lenders
- Stress-testing investments against difficulty growth scenarios
Mathematical Equations
Net Present Value (NPV)
NPV = −CapEx + Σ [CFₜ / (1 + r)ᵗ]
Where CFₜ is net cash flow at month t, and r is the effective monthly discount rate, r = (1 + annual rate)^(1/12) − 1, so NPV compounds monthly exactly like IRR.
Internal Rate of Return (IRR)
0 = −CapEx + Σ [CFₜ / (1 + IRR)ᵗ]
IRR is the discount rate that makes NPV = 0, solved monthly by bisection and shown as an annual rate: (1 + monthly IRR)¹² − 1.
Monthly BTC Revenue
BTC/month = (H / NH) × 144 × (R + Fees) × 365/12 × uptime
H = fleet hashrate (H/s), NH = network hashrate, R = block subsidy (halves in April 2028, then every ~4 years), Fees = average transaction fees per block (default 0.02 BTC). Difficulty and BTC price compound monthly by their growth rates.
Depreciation (DDB)
Depₜ = max(BookValueₜ × 2/N, CapEx/N × 0.5)
Double-declining balance uses 2/N rate on remaining book value, floored at half the straight-line amount.
Shutdown Logic
run if Revenue × (1 − pool fee) > Electricity
In any month where revenue after pool fees can't cover power, the fleet is paused that month (no revenue or electricity; fixed operating costs still apply unless you turn that off) and resumes when profitable again. With "Sell the fleet" on, it is instead sold the first unprofitable month.
Resale Value
CF_shutdown/final += CapEx × Resale %
Hardware is sold at the end of the projection, or at the first unprofitable month when "Sell the fleet" is on.
Loan Payment
PMT = L × r / (1 − (1 + r)^−n), r = APR / 12
L = loan amount, n = term minus any interest-only months (which pay L × r). A balance still owed at sale or the end of the projection is repaid from the resale proceeds.
Equity Cash Flow, DSCR and Tax
Equity CF = Operating CF − Debt service − Tax
DSCR = Operating CF / Debt service
Tax = t × max(0, Operating CF − Depreciation − Interest − Losses carried forward)
Equity IRR and NPV use your equity (CapEx − loan) as the month-0 outflow. Lenders typically look for DSCR of at least 1.25×.
